Dinner & Bikes-Few Pictures, many memories :)

The Dinner and Bikes Tour came through Las Vegas Sept. 9th. Josh Elly and Joe rode into town around 3 oclock. We got straight to cookin! While Joe and Elly went to set up the bookstore at Blackbird Studios, Josh invited Stevie and I to assist in preparing this insanely creative meal! As a meat eater myself I'm proud to say I've always had a strong appreciation for Vegan and Vegetarian cuisine and a respect for the lifestyle. I was completely unprepared for combinations like Yellow Curry and Banana (this was cold) and several other creative combos. We sweated hard for 21/2 hours and were able to get to the studios by 7, just in time to meet the bike ride that was organised by Totecity's Gabriel Allred (thanks!). We got the meal set up and I ran back and forth to the store for utensils and such. The grubbing began and so did the inspiration.

Elly Blue gave a really great presentation regarding the economy of bicycling, an often ignored but important area of study when looking at city planning and the true costs of getting around town. Joe Biel was up next with some shorts that focused in on various ways one can change their community to create a more bike minded and safer place to live and ride in. A few locals shared stories of frustration with the city for providing bike lanes, then taking them away in order to expand roads as new casinos opened. It was really great to share stories with like minded people. The Microcosm books, zines, shirts and other merch. was great to look through and I know a few people had to pick up Joshua Ploeg's In Search of the Lost Taste after tasting what he had to offer.

The Dinner and Bikes Tour was all about opening a dialog, providing information that could affect change, and listening to the unique challenges that face each community.

We shared, we laughed, we grubbed, we learned. We were given a glimmer of hope that positive change can happen here, and we have the ability to make las vegas a safer, better place to live and commute in. Come back and see us next year.

Now sending zines in the mail got a little easier!! Yup the Post Office is ready to recognize my LV zine Library as an official business since a stray piece of mail was sent to the physical address of the library a few months back! What's that mean? Now you can use less ink on the envelope and more ink on those awesome letters you send along with each package -and oh how i love the letters!
No more worrying about spelling my full name out! All you have to write on the envelopes now is--

New Stuff!!! July is IZM & YOU zine available for free (limited # available!)

It's International Zine Month and our Music Fanzine section just got another MAJOR boost! Matt brought in a box of about 70 zines from his personal collection yesterday. They have been cataloged and now they will have anew home on our shelves. One of the many gems in this stack was PolarBearVixen #19, a local punk zine that still kicks ass, despite not having been published in over ten years!

I had already finished this post and put it out when I visited post office today. Whenever there is an envelope with zines I get all googly eyed and quickly rush home so stevie and I can rip open the package together. On the days when there is a key.... it signals a much bigger package, and i get downright sizzling! Today was a key day. To top the excitement the box I found was from Australia! Luke You? Yes indeed. You zine is always a pleasure, always different, humorous, thought provoking, sometimes very everyday, and even puzzling. What's great is that we get to distribute his work at the LVZL FREE! There are always copies that go into the archives, but why not have your own copy! So come down next week and pick up these rather unique zines of correspondence and enjoy!

The mail box was donated by our spoken word, rough and tumble friend Cactus who's been wondering where it went! Zin3pillar is no longer hibernating, he's full of life and HUNGRY!!! Happy Birthday Zine Library!!!!! July First we Celebrate A whole Year bringing zines to the Las Vegas Community! In the last year we've had workshops, music, good times and most of all more ZINES!!! So many people have supported us this year with kind words and creativity. What I thought might be a few shelves forever has now turned into a great collection of local, national and international zines totalling over 500. This next year we hope to double the size of our collection, begin to integrate a lending system(!) and set up a local distro (in addition to the free distro rack currently available). More than a few people have brought their personal collection of zines in to be added, not to mention more and more zine makers coming out of the woodwork with new local zines! Thank you all! A Big Thank you to the Beat Coffeehouse, for getting us started and Emergency Arts for the expansion space. Cactus gave us a mail box that I will be installing soon to act as our drop box, Thank you! Thanks also to the expanding local culture and the people seeking to make Las Vegas better than ever. We have a unique identity apart from the PR Campaigns of huge out of town ad firms that the city council hires to represent us. It's gonna be another great year for zines!!!! Updates! Hey Everybody Our April Zine Workshop went awesome and the zine that resulted again was a great mash up of personalities and creativity. There is a zine I was contacted to put together for a YELP/Marjorie Barrick Museum Exhibition coming up May 20th called 89xxxhibition reflecting on the Las Vegas community. Pretty Exciting stuff. YOu can submit to the zine by sending any content to me at LVZINELIBRARY@GMX.com! We are excited about a new workshop at the end of June involving altered books with Gigi from the G-spot(also inside emergency arts)! By that time it'll be time for the 24 hr zine thing in July while celebrating a YEAR Birthday for the LVZL!!!!! Sounds like a hot summer to me! Hope all things are well with you!

It's time for another zine workshop!!! In this months workshop we will be making a collaborative zine. This time we're gonna shoot for a theme and since it's National poetry month, we'll make POETRY the topic. Whether that means collaging about poetry, ignoring the topic all together, bringing poems from home for your page, or using the typewriter to do some impromptu lines, it's gonna be a blast!

What to bring- Your creative brain. Any poetry/writing you'd like to include.

What we'll have- Glue, paper, scissors of all designs, pens, markers, rulers, stamps, variety of "hole punchers", magazines for collaging, 1 typewriter (thanks norm!), music, positive and supportive energy to help bring out the creative side within you-- and more!--

The previous zine workshop was a great time! Full of creativity and design! Everyone got to explore their artistic skills and hang out with like-minded people. Be sure to join us!

Halloween Parades and Book Festivals

Lots of stuff has happened and I haven't had time to write about it. HALLOWEEN!!!! Emergency Arts invited LVZL along for the first annual Las Vegas Halloween Parade downtown! It was a lot of fun despite the hundreds of blank staring faces that did'nt know what to make of us all! I sported a giant zine and my lady had on the paper zine dress crafted by the creative Jen over at FLOCKFLOCKFLOCK. Super cool!Thanks Ya'll! Then there was the Vegas Valley Book Festival was a success. I shared a booth with the boys from the Bike Bucket. We collaborated to make a DIY bike repair 1/4 size zine called asic-bay ike-bay epair-ray. We had a good time meeting people eating free hot dogs provided by the city and educating people on zines and co-operatives. The progress with the mural for the new space is moving a little slow due to the artist moving and life circumstances, but as soon as it's done the pictures will go up! Thanks for the recent donations which i will list soon!

Emergency Arts gives LVZL a chance to expand!

It's been a hectic few weeks! Zinebriated was a great end to the month of September! The open mic I've been co-hosting with my good friend Dj miss Joy at the Beat Coffeehouse(Human Experience Mondays 7pm) has been blooming this month with talent and support. The Vegas Valley Book Festival has cleared a space for the Zine Library to table, in collaboration with local co-op bike shop Bike Bucket.

As if these weren't signs enough that our community is really embracing community organizations, non-profits and local culture, another opportunity has presented itself about which I am booming with excitement. The Emergency Arts gang has opened up a space known as the common area(the midway between all the galleries)to the Las Vegas Zine Library's need for expansion! I may have mentioned in the past that I was no longer able to add more zines to the existing shelves because of my restricted space. I had about 75 zines/chapbooks in storage just waiting to be bagged and shelved! Well, enter this new space, the zines now have come out of the storage closet and live happily on our new shelves! I spent the better part of last week painting with my lady(color coordinator extraordinaire)and have more plans to paint in the next several weeks to really create a space that will be a welcoming, multi-functional and creative open space. The new LVZL has lots of storage, so workshops are now being planned and supplies will be available for open 'zine sessions'. LVZL is now much more physically accessable and open to those who need to work on their latest self publishing project(with some extra resources and people to do it with).
LVZL is a community project and always will be, so please send any and all ideas on how to improve the space, what kind of resources you would like to see provided, and what kind of workshops you'd like to be a part of (teaching or participating) to

Zinebriated: 9/25/2010 A Night To Remember

Zinebriated 2010 started out with a big blank wall 13 ft tall by 71/2 feet long and as I'm taping the letters across the middle of the empty space, all I'm thinking is 'how are we gonna fill this much space in the span of a few hours?'. The people came. Turned out another event DontBelong.coms first live video cast was booked the same night and they had 2 bands set to play. We combined forces and as the music played people added more glue, ink and color to the now not so empty 'zine space. Aj Moyer did some great spoken word pieces between the bands that were entertaining and thought provoking. (THANKS!)

Everytime I went to the wall to add something I was surprised by all that had happened since I last visited. It was becoming it's own organism warping and changing with each personality that interacted with it. Food was being servedd (zine sandwich contest was cancelled due to poor planning) and it was delicious (thanks ANDY)! We had a bridal party come in off the Strip to party with us and add alittle flair to the wall. It was a great representation of how people can come together and create! By the time Rolling Fingers finished up their bang up set the wall was filled. It reminded me of a cave drawing in it's size, though the content varies slightly from hunting and gathering (or does it?). Innerviews' Chris Jones was on hand to print out copies of their latest release the LOVE ISSUE. The first 16 guests got goodie bags with stickers, pins, zines, patches, and candy!

Now the second half of the project begins as I craft what was done throughout the night into a zine that will be mailed out when done! Everything has been smoothed out there's another bump in the road, a page you forgot to include or one that is upside down and wasn't caught till you printed 75 of em. So here's the latest for tonight adjustments and all.....

Due to a mix up that was beyond our control, Close to Modern will not be performing. :( However the boys from Rolling Fingers came through on a days notice and saved the day! GAME ON! Thanks guys, lotsa love! WE hope we can have Close To Modern play at another event since those guys are super rad. Aj Moyer is still set to steal your heart straight outa your chest make your mind explode scanner style with his spoken word. The prep for this experiment are in place! All that's missing now is YOU! See you in the LAb at 6pm!

Zines On Toast Tour Stops in Vegas!

Last Friday the Zines On Toast Tour a band of zine slinging writers and illustrators came by the zine library for some food, coffee, and to talk zines. Alex Wrekk, Steve Larder, Tom Fiction, Isy Morgenmuffel, Edd Baldry and Natalie Last Hours all sat down and chatted with me that morning picking up some flyers and stickers and Leaving more zines behind. Unfortunately due to their tight schedule, they weren't able to stay for a reading. :( Everyone was real friendly and it was great to have their support with kind words about finding a zine library in this odd, dry desert city. SO support The tour by going to the reading in your area, and buying some merch. You can come down anytime and see their additions to the library which is now looking bloated at over 400 titles! Thanks for taking the time to stop by, for donating your work, and spreading the love of zines and DIY self publishing across the Us! Safe Travels!

Innerviews and the LVZL finalizing Zine Event for September!

In conjunction with Innerviews zine and others LVZL is in the final planning stages of the first zine event in the valley in what seems like too long! The event, planned for mid Sept., will include music, a fully immersive zine demo, as well as lots of free goodies. The event will highlight zine culture alongside the release of Innerviews newest issue! Lots of fun! The finalized details and program will be posted shortly so check in frequently! :)

Innerviews #1-5

Color! Insight! LocaL! Saturated with love! That's how I gotta describe Innerviews. This wicked little monster of a local zine that's the brain child of Michelle Franco, local writer/journalist is a local project to keep track of. As it's title suggests, Innerviews gives us glimpses of people from around our city via short, compelling interviews. Each issue is unique as Michelle works with a variety of topics and people who support the written framework with their art & design. It's been great to watch this zine mature and move ever more in the direction of a stand-alone fluid work of art. The photo issue (#5) is super fresh with an all color look and a poster fold out to keep you smiling all day! :D The interviews in 5 center around local photographers Mad Tam Lopez, Bryan Hainer, Chris Jones, Jorge Novoa, Mr. Riskit & Cunt Dracula. We are waiting the arrival of back issue #6 which has a really sick photo shoot and interview with local band THE OBJEX. Issue 7 is set to be published in September so we'll keep you updated on any exact release date. 10 lbs box and some love from Italy

I had been waiting for two weeks(ish). Checking my box obsessively in anticipation, sometimes twice a day. I was nearly convinced i was victim to human error and the package I so eagerly thirsted for, and then.....the yellow slip was there. Today. Cue ball post master slips into the back and out comes the box. HEAVY BOX. IT MADE IT!!! MYSTERY BOX CHECK! Sent over from Chicago thanks to Billy da Bunny! THANK YOU!!!!! The bonus package was a cool full page comic from ITALY! So as it will take me a while to catalog all this treasure enjoy the flix for now. I am pretty confident the shelves are officially gonna be packed.....time to rethink the space :)

Thanks in large part to Zine World announcing the opening of the Las Vegas Zine Library, we (you and me!)have been receiving donations from across the country from people who want to help us grow! :) Here's the latest in what we gots to offer!

Don Fields sent over two issues of "Twilight World" a perzine of his journeys, one of which covers his recent trip to Vegas! Thanks for the letter and the zines out of Grover Beach Ca. Don!

Kelly Froh sent down 5 perzine/mini-comics that are a fun read from Seattle. "Slither #6", "The Cheapest SOB's", "Wet Sandwich", "Norman #1", and "The Five Year Itch of Dorothy Barry" will all be available for your reading pleasure by Tuesday July 22nd! Thanks for your contribution Kelly!

The Zines keep rolling in!

So let's see.....
First of all let me say THANK YOU to EVERYBODY who has donated zines to share with everyone! I want to also thank Dakota and Stevie (my love!) for helping out and keeping this project going! We just got a massive donation from Moose. He dropped off a big chunk of his history and expanded the collection to now included over 40 punk/hardcore fanzines (FLIPSIDE and Maximum Rock & Roll) from the 80s & 90s! It's been cool reading all these old interviews with punk bands that have influenced me over the years, not to mention all the bands i never heard of or forgot about! New poetry chapbooks are trickling in from local poets(Mick Axelrod) and presses (Zeitgiest Press) too!
I'm glad we have a place to share our love for zines!!!!!

So How Does It Work?

Here's how it works:
You show up at the Emergency Arts Center (520 Fremont)
Chat it up with the friendly staff of The Beat Cafe, order a beverage or sumthin...
Make a Z-line for the Zine Shelf
Choose from hundreds of zines on array of topics
Kick back, put an LP on and enjoy! (at the Beat you're the Dj, they got the vinyl!)
Put the zine back when you're done, grab another, rinse repeat!

The LVZL currently is more of a collection on display than a typical check-out library system. However the goal is to get to that point to allow a more free flowing access. For now there just isn't the technical support for this kind of system. We're still in our infancy, despite the collection being rather sizable! We're getting good feedback from those who've stopped by, and those who hear about it! So keep checking back for updates on workshops, events and additions to the archive. Thanks for all your support!

Las Vegas Zine Library Opens its archives!!!!

We are excited to announce the first installation of the Las Vegas Zine Library will open July 1st!!!! Just in time for IZM (International Zine Month)! The Beat Cafe inside the Emergency Arts Center downtown (across from the El Cortez) has generously donated space inside their cafe to house Las Vegas' only public zine archive! The Beat is a great locally owned spot at the heart of our city, where a good cup of coffee and music not piped in via Corporate mandate can be enjoyed (snacks? think muffintops)! Big thanks are due to owners Michael and Jennifer Cornwaithe for their support of LVZL and the local arts! THANK YOU!
